How Jolly Good Sing was started

As an experienced singer, musician and choir member, I spotted a gap in the market.

Most choirs sing in harmony parts and spend time rehearsing for concerts.
This is a wonderful longstanding tradition enjoyed by millions of people around the world.  However – there are also many people who love to sing without the strictures of a concert or learning harmony parts.

Over an extensive research period I came to the conclusion that many people would just like an opportunity to sing: out loud and in an environment that was safe to do so.  So, I created Jolly Good Sing to provide a singing opportunity and a safe place in which to make some sounds with others. Songs are chosen from the periods where most of the participants would have been learning ‘at mother’s knee’ or from the decades when they would have been young adults. Songs range from the music halls through to the 1960s with a few older and universally known songs thrown in.

My leadership style is relaxed and welcoming. The aim of Jolly Good Sing is that we sing.

I am not looking for perfection in the singing as my primary aim is in the enjoyment and experience rather than the finished sound.
Having said that, there are many magical moments within any session.

I am a full member of the Musicians’ Union, Sound Sense community music organisation, and an associate member of the Arts Health and Wellbeing network and the Natural Voice practitioners’ network.

I undertake training every year to keep my style (and myself) fresh.
